The 25th Annual Bedford County Juried Fine Arts Exhibit drew submissions from 40 artists and includes 44 pieces that will be on display through Oct. 30.

The multimedia show at the Bedford County Arts Center includes original works of painting, photography and sculpture by artists from around the region.

This year's submissions were judged on Monday by Jean Barnes Downs, an artist and instructor with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wittenberg University.

"I looked over the work submitted, choosing pieces that showed innovation within the medium, accomplishment in handling it, confident use of the elements of design and an extra little spark in the piece that kept me coming back to it," Downs wrote of her decisions. "I congratulate the Bedford area artists on their presentation of strong, innovative work."

Best of Show honors went to Yangsook Lambert of Tyrone for her painting entitled "Opus 82."

In two-dimensional works, Melinda Myers Grass of Everett won first place for her painting "Come Hither," and Rodney Barber of Everett won second place for his painting "Across the Road."

Duncan Everhart of Alum Bank won first place in three-dimensional works for his wood sculpture "Paired Opposites I."

In photography, Bonnie Frijters of Huntingdon won first place with "Early Summer Morning," and Maggy Wagner of Cresaptown, Md., won second place with "Sunpower."

Most Honorable Mention went to Robin Grass of Everett for his painting entitled "The Race," while Honorable Mentions were awarded to Connie Smith of Bedford for her painting "The Queen," and Laura Kohan of Schellsburg for her sculpture "Nested Rabbits."

The gallery is free and open to the public weekly from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. It will also be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both Sundays of the Fall Foliage festival.

Through next Friday, Oct. 9, visitors can vote for their favorite pieces to receive a People's Choice Award, and the winner will be announced during the second weekend of the festival.

A Meet the Artists reception, also free to the public, will be held on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The arts center is located in the Anderson House, 137 E. Pitt Street, Bedford. It is handicapped accessible. For more information, call 623-1538 or email arts@bedford.net.
