Local artists have assembled once again at the Bedford County Arts Center to present the 17th annual Members Invitational Multimedia Exhibit, which opens to the public today.

Twenty-four members have entered 51 pieces in the show, including traditional photography, paintings and etchings as well as unique fiber art, jewelry, leather handbags and scale models.

Woodworker Michael Reed is the artist behind two recognizable covered bridge models in the show. Each is built 1/48th to scale and are "as accurate as I can get them," Reed said of the Yount Station and Herline covered bridge models.

Reed has been recreating covered bridges since the late 1970s or early 1980s. This is his first time entering his wooden models in a show, though he once exhibited other work at the arts center when he and his family first moved to Bedford County between 1993 and 1994.

"I've been working on a series of local ones lately," he said, noting that several of his models are on display at the Jean Bonnet Tavern. "Before I do a bridge, I go out to the site of the existing bridge and measure it up and take a whole bunch of pictures."

Covered bridges that no longer exist, Reed uses old photographs to recreate. There are currently 14 remaining covered bridges in Bedford County, five of which the artist has built to scale. In addition to Yount Station in Dutch Corner and Herline in Manns Choice, Reed has recreated Bowsers/Osterburg in Osterburg, Jacksons Mill in Breezewood and Cuppetts in New Paris.

Painter and new arts center member Matt Doyle also has two works on display during the exhibit. He exhibited works at the arts center during the members juried show in October and several years ago as a high school student. He also participated in Lancaster County art shows while in college.

Doyle, son of Mike and Brenda Doyle of Everett, is a 2005 graduate of Bedford High School and recently graduated from Penn College of Art and Design in Lancaster with a major in fine art. "I just want to continue to get better and hit up galleries," he said of his future as an artist.

"I primarily stick with wildlife and every once in awhile, I put a landscape in. I'm working on probably five or six pieces right now," Doyle continued. His paintings included in the members show are entitled "The Haunting," which features a giant, almost prehistoric-looking fish, and "The Storm's Last Breath."

The Members Invitational Multimedia Exhibit is held once a year and is a non-juried show for all members of the arts council, which includes artists from Bedford County and outlying areas such as Altoona, Hollidaysburg and Cumberland, Md. Most of the entries in the exhibit are for sale.

An opening reception with refreshments will be held on Jan. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the arts center, located in the Anderson House at 137 E. Pitt St., Bedford, and the show will run through Feb. 26. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
