"BLACK AND WHITE" By
Jennifer Howard
Gazette Staff Writer
From
a Venice Morning photograph and concrete leaves to a
Shadow and a skirt made from ties, the medium is as varied as the
content on
display at the Bedford County Arts Center this month.
About
28
artists took on the task of creating art in black and white, with
shades of
gray, for the black and white multimedia show.
Venice
was
photographed by Gary Dehmcke of Bedford, while the concrete leaves,
complete
with veins, were created by Gay Iapalucci of Bedford. Alyson Dehmcke of
Bedford
created the tie skirt and the Shadow was formed by Elizabeth Marten of
Cincinnati, Ohio. An explanation is included with the Shadow, which
states that
the black and white figurative sculpture has a core and basic dress
made from
white silk dupioni, while the under layer is composed of multiple
fibers and
strips of candled organza. The face is polymer clay with a ribbon head
dress.
Seed bead flowers embellish the costume. Polymer clay flowers and
leaves circle
the base.
Other
works
on display include a "Directionally Impaired" fabric wall hanging by
Chris Smith, a charcoal steam engine (K4) by Kevin Kutz and a bird of
prey
watercolor by Sandy Detwiler, which adds a touch of yellow to the beak
and eye
area. There are about 50 works on display, created through photography,
watercolor, charcoal, pen and ink, pencil, acrylic, fabric, oil and
scratchboard.
A reception to meet the artists will
be held from 1 to 3
p.m. April 11.
